Big business cannot be trusted to do the right thing. Its as simple as that. Nearly all large organizations are doing something wrong or illegal for their own benefit.
We have to stop trusting them to look after themselves. We have to stop fooling ourselves by thinking that markets regulate themselves.
As evidenced in this article the electricity market didn’t regulate itself. JPMorgan manipulated it. Illegally. Eventually they got caught. Most don’t.
The thing that gets overlooked in stories like this is that they DID illegally manipulate the electricity market.
JPMorgan Chase illegally manipulated the electricity market.
___________ illegally manipulated the ___________ market.
You can fill in the blanks with tons of names of big banks and other corporations and the name of any market out there.
Its so easy to overlook the fact that businesses are regularly flouting the law for financial gain.

Philanthropy is great, but when its part of a system that perpetuates the problems it seeks to solve, its really just part of the problem, albeit a lessor of evils version.
Inside any important philanthropy meeting, you witness heads of state meeting with investment managers and corporate leaders. All are searching for answers with their right hand to problems that others in the room have created with their left.
As more lives and communities are destroyed by the system that creates vast amounts of wealth for the few, the more heroic it sounds to “give back.”
But this just keeps the existing structure of inequality in place.
People will rise above making $2 a day to enter our world of goods and services so they can buy more. But doesn’t all this just feed the beast?
Money should be spent trying out concepts that shatter current structures and systems that have turned much of the world into one vast market. Is progress really Wi-Fi on every street corner? No. It’s when no 13-year-old girl on the planet gets sold for sex. But as long as most folks are patting themselves on the back for charitable acts, we’ve got a perpetual poverty machine.
Brick and mortar stores seem to think its ok to spy on customers because their inline competitors do. Since when did we decide that anyone should have the right to surreptitiously gather personal info?
We didn’t because NobodyisFlyingthePlane. Its time for Federal guidelines and limits on data gathering and privacy.

World Population Day is a great start to recognizing that so many of the worlds problems stem from over population.
The best cure for over population is prosperity which brings down the birthrate, but we need more than that to avoid the resultant Eco crisis and resource shortages headed our way.
Its astounding that there are still educated citizens of economically developed countries who work their asses off to subvert sex education, sexual health initiatives, contraception, and reproductive rights. Its not surprising that poor and uneducated people in emerging economies act this way, the effort just to subsist doesn’t leave much time for contemplation of global concerns.
What is surprising with any community is when they can’t see that they are furthering their own problems by ignoring the reality around them. Indians, and especially young Indians, are fucking themselves crazy. Their parents can put their head in the sand and say it isn’t happening, but their runaway population growth in the last 20 years belies that.
The following Time article addresses India’s population problems, out of control adolescent pregnancy rates, and the country’s inability to see the need for sex education, sexual health initiatives, contraception, reproductive rights, and gender rights.
The NSA spies and Democrats look away
NobodyisFlyingthePlane when the only thing liberals and conservatives can agree on is that citizens need fewer civil liberties and more spying upon. The staff here believed that Democrats would eventually reverse the pernicious removal of liberties that began with the Patriot Act. It seems that government, no matter its political flavor, can’t give up power and control over its citizens. Its amazing that liberals aren’t even raising their voices in protest even if it was only half assed.
