Somebody is attempting to fly the plane. It happens all the time, but rest assured that NobodyisFlyingthePlane.
The Heritage Foundation has made a very successful attempt to hijack the plane. They’re doing a reasonable job of hijacking our legislative process, but ultimately they will not wrest control of the the plane itself. Narrowly focused interest groups can’t chart the path for too long. The plane is all of us, and would be pilots will succeed only when the interests and needs of all citizens are addressed.
What might help in the interim would be equally effective hijack machines representing the center and the left, all three using the Heritage approach.
It uses a three-pronged strategy to twist arms on Capitol Hill: lobbying members on hot-button issues, ranking them publicly on how they vote, and getting word out far and wide when lawmakers buck the conservative line.
In a broken system, more info about what our reps are doing might at least allow for level flight.
Of course there are illegal markets for personal financial info such as SSN’s and credit reports. Identity theft is huge business for some. Most people probably take a few steps to try and protect themselves.
Why then is there little outrage when businesses practically invite identity thieves to grab large troves of data? Why is there no interest in having the Federal Government adopt some standards and laws for the collection and sale of personal data?
Why is it ok for those on the seamy side of Big Data to be allowed to aggregate data about us, profit from selling it legally to marketing firms and not be held accountable when their servers get hacked?
Its time to hold Big Data accountable for the data it collects.
Can you act willfully if you disagree with “the System”?
Depends who you ask.
“there can be no expectation that the system will act morally of its own accord.”
Systems are optimized for their own survival and preventing the system from doing evil may well require breaking with organizational niceties, protocols or laws.
I think the best systems have legitimate and useable self reporting systems built in so that problems of any kind, and especially shady practices can be sorted out.
