Sustainability doesn’t have to be incompatible with economic success.
If Unilever can actually double revenue and simultaneously cut its environmental impact in half, it will have made progress toward one of the most important sustainability milestones. It would have unlinked economic growth from resource consumption, reconciling the expanding needs of a growing population with the fact that natural resources are finite.
“It is essential that economic growth and natural resource use be decoupled,” Mr. Cramer of BSR said. “Simply replicating Western consumption patterns as they are today would require more natural resources than are available.”
