Everything new is old, and everything old is new again.
If you asked the staff here at NobodyisFlyingthePlane about Trump/Drumpf a year ago we’d have told you, “Not much longer now before his ignominious exit”. The cavalcade of wrongness regarding our belief in his chances still hasn’t abated. Despite that, we can now see that his turn isn’t unprecedented.
Drumpf is Same Same, but Different, and maybe it’s that same sameness that should be celebrated. Not by demeaning our country (or humanity for that matter) by giving him the respect that a major party candidate deserves. We should instead celebrate that a party can be suborned by a single person. The two party hierarchy isn’t so rigid that one fool can bring it down.
Mr. Trump as an heir to a tradition of isolationism and cultural paranoia that surfaces from time to time as a “recurrent theme” in American politics. Mr. Trump, he said, had articulated a familiar exhortation “for America to withdraw from the world, that we have only threats coming from abroad.”
What all agree on, though, is that Mr. Trump’s stunning victory is rooted in his ability to tap directly into American discontent.
[He] had “turned anger and frustration into a product” that would be salable this fall.
