How are we still debating abortion? How has this minor issue in life become the cudgel that both sides cling to in order to bash the other side in a proxy war over the place of religion in public life.
This is not to say that it’s not a complex issue with deep ramifications for women, but there are and have been big and deep issues in this country which we don’t discuss with the frequency or fervor we reserve for what is incontrovertibly a personal health decision.
Why do we let politicians force polarizing issues to the fore when there are more pressing issues to be resolved? Is it just because they believe it will drive ideological voters to the ballot box? If more people voted could we retire these tired issues and focus on improving g the country and the world?
